After 25 years of being a pool swimmer Gerry has changed my open water mindset by encouraging me to think outside of the pool. Gerry has educated me on the strategies necessary to succeed and has taught me how to modify my pool skills in order to reach my potential as an open water swimmer. In addition to being an experienced and knowledgeable coach, Gerry is also a great human being who cares greatly about all of his athletes. I am fortunate to have Gerry as a resource and friend and look forward to working more with him in the future.
“Gerry is, without doubt, the best swim coach I have worked with – and there have been a few as I’ve been a competitive swimmer since 1990. Every session has a specific purpose and every swimmer knows they are being watched and assessed which means one thing: Gerry gets the best from you session after session. I have recently relocated to Santa Monica from the UK and one of the major draws of being based here is being able to work with Gerry. In less than two months my swim speed, efficiency and confidence have all soared and I am truly excited about what I can achieve in the future. I’m a firm believer that everyone has their calling in life: Gerry has found his and his innate talent as a coach has benefited – and will continue to benefit – scores of swimmers and triathletes for years to come.”

I have had the pleasure of working with Gerry & Tower 26 off and on since 2010. I never thought I would say that I love swimming with a snorkel and a band, but Gerry’s positive enthusiasm has made these staples of my swim training! Gerry has a great talent and eye for open water swimming. He motivates swimmers of all abilities to achieve there personal best and seek improvement both in the pool, on land and in open water. It’s hard to not become a better swimmer or get excited about swimming when you are around him & the other Tower 26 swimmers and triathletes.
“The morning open water swim sessions at Tower 26 have been amazing and invaluable. Gerry’s ability to simulate what happens in a triathlon swim is amazing. His knowledge is impeccable and the way he delivers it will leave you knowing you can tackle any situation that pops up in a race. It does not matter what ability, Gerry will give you some personal tip to work on, to improve your own open water swimming. The confidence I have got from his sessions is amazing and a factor that has helped me get out with the best swimmers in Triathlon. When ever I am in LA it is a must for me to attend. I may not be the best pool swimmer but in open water thanks to Gerry I have the skills to be a good open water swimmer, Thanks Gerry and see you in LA soon.”
I would describe Gerry as the swim doctor. I’ve seen so many people come to him with different strengths and weaknesses…. from pro to beginners and he works meticulously with each person in order to make sure they have complete individual attention. He creates quite a unique swim program that elevates our gains in the water as quickly as possible. He attacks the swim from all angles…obviously physical but also teaches open water tactics, mental preparation, and technique and that is absolutely priceless in open water swims.
I came to Gerry with the need for my swim to go from one of the last pros out of the water to chasing the lead group of women and that is quite the undertaking. Within three months, I was able to drop about 2 minutes off my half ironman times and 3-4 off my fulls and that put me in the second pack of pro women. Gerry knew I didn’t need a lot of focus on technique but more of the mental strength believing I could hit hard sets and reach deeper. He helped me realize I have much more potential in swimming then I ever knew possible and of course, he pushed me harder and faster than anyone ever has. I know that if I was able to continue to work with Gerry, I could be swimming in the first pack of pro women in less than a year! I continue to take everything he has taught me and put it to good use in the pool everyday.
Gerry is one man who truly understands what it takes to become a strong open water swimmer. Not only does he know swimming inside and out but he can still kick some major butt in the pool!

My pre-Kona training was based in Santa Monica. My coach, Matt Dixon, introduced me to Gerry and told me that I should get myself along to some of his sessions. More than a handful of people who I had told about my trip to LA had asked, “So, you’re going to hook up with Gerry?” I’m a swimmer by background, and although I am always keen to improve I kind of treat my swim as one of the more “sorted” disciplines in triathlon. I have swum with a fair few squads but Gerry’s sessions are different. They are not about making your rep times faster in the pool (although they probably achieve that too) but about making you fitter and faster for the triathlon swim. Gerry very quickly was able to give me a couple of pointers about my stroke and the sessions I did with his squad prepared me for the scrum start in Kona and the changes in pace I’d need to react to in order to keep with a fast pack. It worked! I swam one minute quicker than last year, despite tougher conditions and no full length speed suit and I can now say I was the first woman out the water at the Ironman World Championships. Thank you Gerry!
Gerry’s swim instruction is simple, yet effective. His open water Tower 26 workouts were key in preparing me for the 2010 Armed Forces Triathlon Championship in Pt. Mugu, CA. This year I completed the 1500m open water swim over 2 minutes faster than in 2009. The improved swim time set me up perfectly to become the first woman in the Air Force to win the National Championship!
When I first started swimming with Gerry almost two years ago, I was getting out of the water in local races near the back of the pack. Flash forward to 2010–I am now competing at the highest level of triathlon in the world. I compete internationally in the ITU World Championship Series, often getting out of the water in the pack with some of the fastest swimmers in the sport! Gerry is no less than the highest authority on all aspects of open water swimming. His real-world open water racing experience is literally unparalleled in the sport. Combined with his years of on-deck coaching experience, no one is more qualified to take swimmers of *any level* to their fullest potential. In the sport of triathlon, many argue who is “the best” coach, but in open water swimming, there is no equal!
Gerry is the guru of open water swimming. He took me, a novice swimmer, and gave me the skills I needed to take my swimming and racing to the next level. Because of Gery’s race simulation workouts, I was much better prepared and confident on race day.
This is a huge, huge thank you to Gerry, as he has taught me, most importantly, HOW to train and what I need to do to get better. No more going to the pool and swimming 2-3k straight by myself and calling it a day. His workouts have a purpose. He holds his swimmers accountable. He wrote down all our times and was keeping track of our progress. The only reason I went back to LA was to work with Gerry. Thank you for everything Gerry!
